Console Server bieten dem Administrator über den seriellen Port Zugriff auf das CLI (Command Line Interface) seiner Server und PCs. Darüber hinaus können aber auch andere Systeme wie USV Anlagen oder Switche und Router, welche eine serielle Schnittstelle besitzen, gemanaged werden. Bei Ausfall des Netzwerkes ist auch ein Out of Band Management durch Einwahl über Modem möglich.
